St. Philip's church got its start at the Montgomery Hotel in downtowm San Jose. The first members of the church had been invited to have a meal together to see where the Will of God was leading toward the birth of St. Philip's. Current members and some of the remaining "first members" met again at the Montgomery to share what the beginnings were like.
