As I read the story of Jesus’ baptism I’m reminded that it took Jesus thirty years of preparation before his public baptism. This tells me that it takes time to get ready for God’s mission. How many hours did Jesus spend in prayer? There was quite a bit of preparation that had to take place for him to move forward in the path that had to be followed. We have a heritage of 50 years of journeying as a community of faith. It is never too late for any of us to say “yes” to God. We have not begun the journey into the year 2007, the year that will mark our 50th Anniversary. This passage of scripture calls on us to take a step forward in boldness, to not let the voices that urge us to be cautious take the best of us. In our baptism God has welcomed us as his children, heirs of the Kingdom, the chosen of God, the beloved of God. Let us reaffirm our Baptismal vow and let us find our motivation to respond to God’s call to mission with justice and love in the longing to hear God’s voice telling us “with you I’m well pleased,” and in the knowledge that we are the beloved children of God.
