This week I would like to begin the reflection by asking a question that I hope will open up conversation around the mission and ministry of our parish. What would our church be like if, instead of sweating about all the stuff that goes wrong, we really got a hold of the promises of God, and looked to the light instead of the darkness, and began delighting in all the stuff that goes right as signs of God's faithfulness towards us and towards the world he has made? I pose this question as a way to remind us that there are more enduring things than the pains we experience and there are more important things to do than simply moan about what is not good. We need to focus on things that decrease pain and increase wholeness, and all this to the glory of God. One of those things that we need to focus on is peace and this peace is found in living a life of faith. Peace is found in trusting in the living God and in His everlasting love. Our first experience of this unconditional and everlasting love was from our mother, one the biggest examples of love. Tom and Carol Valentine offered a picture of their new grandson, Simon, with Mom, Dad and big brother Jack. In this picture you cannot overlook the reality of Love and happiness that exists in the family, and I truly believe that Mothers are the channels of that love. The meaning of Jesus words of peace are based on love; this peace is a peace that lasts, a peace that triumphs, a peace that heals, and that is not something that the world can give us, it can only come to us from God. Thanks to all the Mothers that have understood this love of God and have been willing to share in that love to their children and family. Happy Mother's Day!!!
